And now to the lesson....

A few years back I saw Horacio 'El Negro' Hernandez on a Modern Drummer festival video. I was nearly brought to tears by the stuff he was playing - I just couldn't believe it could be done. There was one particular groove he played that I just had to figure out. In the following 3 videos I've broken it down so you can learn it for yourself.

Here are a few things that you might find useful for working on your left foot clave playing this groove:-

A foot mounted cowbell eg. Pearl PPS20 Cowbell Foot Pedal Bracket or woodblock (you can just use the hihat but this sounds better)

And 4 cowbells of differing pitch

Pearl Horacio Hernandez Signature Cowbells HH-1 Hi Pitch Cha-Cha Bell

Pearl Horacio Hernandez Signature Cowbells HH-2 Foot-Clave Bell

Pearl Horacio Hernandez Signature Cowbells HH-3 Low-Pitch Cha-Cha Bell

Pearl Horacio Hernandez Signature Cowbells HH-4 Mambo Bell

Pearl Horacio Hernandez Signature Cowbells HH-5 Timbale Bell

Joe

Thanks,
Joe
